What is the best desktop computer for me to get under $1,400 ?
I’m interested in buying a new desktop with a budget of 1400 dollars (Canadian). I want it to run smoothly and to be able to handle multiple applications at the same time. I don’t really need it for things like gaming, but I work with videos and media in general… programs like sony vegas, fx etc.. So what brand shoud I get? Gateway? HP? Acer?
Dual Core or i3/i5 etc?
I’m not exactly a pro at choosing the right technology, so I really need help 
Oh, also I’ve been told to build one from scratch, but I don’t like the risks that come along with the parts not working together etc, just …no.

If you’re not a tech pro, good thing you have wits enough not to try to build it from scratch. 
I would suggest that you don’t get any PC brand. I recommend you get a Mac.
A 21.5″ iMac with a 3.05 GHz core2duo and 4GB of DDR3 RAM will certainly be powerful enough for you to multitask, especially considering that the operating system is not Windows. And Mac screens are always among the best. The screen is full 1080p and the graphics are GeForce 9400M, which is pretty respectable.
It will cost you $1,299 at the Apple store, maybe less if you can get it on Amazon.com (which I wouldn’t know about for Canada).
The benefits of getting a Mac are obvious:
It’s user friendly
Stable and reliable
Won’t get viruses and doesn’t need all that expensive and resource-intensive internet security software (just turn on the built-in Firewall and don’t download illegal software).
Much easier to multi-task with than Windows 7. I’ve used Windows 7, and I’m always annoyed when I want to switch to a different application. If I have more than one window open for say Word, if I click on the Word icon in the taskbar, you still have to click again which window of Word you want to bring to front. You don’t need to do that in Mac, and exposé is also a huge time saver this way.
Automatic system backups are really easy to set up.
If you would spend $300 on Office 2010 for Windows, you would only sped $50 on iWork ’09.
Final Cut Pro, which is pretty much the video editing standard, only works on Macs.
