The Future of Linux GUI’s?

I like to think that Linux is usually a few years ahead of Microsoft and Apple because many distributions have six-month rolling releases, and because they are constantly being updated by their users. So many of the changes we saw in Leopard and Vista, particularly in terms of the graphical user interfaces, appeared to be things that had already been possible under gnome, kde, and other desktop environments available for Linux. It seems to me that the last great innovations that became possible in for the Linux gui were part of window managers like beryl and compiz fusion, for example the 3d workspace cube. My question is this: does anyone know what the next big thing will be in the world of Linux desktop environments? It seems like there is a lot of potential to make the way a user interacts with their desktop more 3 dimensional; but specifically, what cool new features can we look forward to in gnome, kde, e17, etc.

Eh, nothing much has changed as of late, or as of like five years ago, assuming you don’t dig spinning cubes. The nerds have their tiling windows managers and minimalist *boxes, and the newer users and sane folks have their Windows-clone desktop environments. Truth be told, things are pretty stagnant, and often, updates aren’t just being committed. Looks like Fluxbox and XFCE have stalled, Elightenment will never leave beta, and Gnome is moving at a Debian-like snail’s pace. Most attention seems to be on KDE4, so Google that. I hate KDE, but you might like at least reading about whatever’s new in 4.xx, because it was a pretty big leap for Desktop Linux.

As for spinning cubes and the like, I doubt more than fifteen percent of Linux users run them. I remember trying Beryl for a lark, but couldn’t get it to stop causing all manner of trouble. Not worth it.
