After building a custom desktop computer, Can I…?
Can I run the computer without a Operating System? e.g. Windows 7 Home Premium. I mean If I need to install it then I need to power up the computer right? Is there some kind of default operating system?
Yes you need an operating system. Do not let anyone talk you into using a pirated disk. You will find yourself with many problems down the road.
The first two answers are good. I wanted you to be aware that you do need to get a disk. I started with Windows Vista Home Premium installed and had to reinstall. Which meant I had to call Micro Soft and Demand a disk. I paid for the program and it crashed. There was no recovery working. They sent me a disk in French. I had to call and get an English disk.
You do not need to partition your drive, but it is best to have atleast two partitions so you can do a backup. I have run out of available partitions on my 1.32T worth of drives and have volumes instead. Why? Cause your PC can search for programs faster and it is easier to find things than using folders. I use folders as well.
Interesting point I read was about Linux. One of my kids likes it. An answer earlier today said that Linux is not an operating system it is a Kernal. ?? If it works without Window or DOS then it is an operating system. A kernal is a sub program of Linux if I got my info right.
Get Windows 7 pop it in disk drive and boot up and follow the directions. Keep everything updated. Always remember you can come back to this site for more info.
