In the year since its release, Apple’s iPad has garnered more favourable headlines aroun d the world than even the company’s CEO Steve Jobs might have hoped. It’s a device that has, in one bound, changed the media landscape and reshaped experts’ perceptions of the future of computing. But from this coming week, consumers in Britain can finally discover that Apple is not the only fruit.
We have had, admittedly, tablets before in many guises. But the launch of Google’s Android tablet operating system, codenamed Honeycomb, is the first to rival the “magical” experience offered by the iPad.
The operating system will, like Windows, be used by a host of manufacturers. For now, however, Motorola’s Xoom and Asus’s Transformer are first among equals.

Plug in your Motorola Xoom expecting to download brilliant games and surprisingly lovely extras and you’ll be almost totally disappointed. But that is not the fault of Motorola or any other manufacturer. Asus, however, gets round the problem with their tablet by including a rival version of Microsoft’s popular Office product, offering spreadsheets, word processing and presentation software. It’s an imperfect solution, but it makes their device better for some target customers.
