Strange drill-like noises from laptop? (fan perhaps)
My Fujitsu Lifebook S6231 laptop has recently been making strange drill-like (drrrrr) noises upon start-up and periods of high activity. At other times, the computer’s low-volume buzz sounds like a machine in need of oiling.
I’ve used this laptop for over three years, so…
1. It is by no means a new machine.
2. I know that it does not normally sound like this.
What do you think the problem might be? Is something (e.g. the fan) broken and in need of repair? Or are the insides just dirty and in need of some cleaning? I hope it’s the latter, in which case… how do you clean the insides of a laptop?
Thank you very much!
FYI… My laptop is normally a very quiet machine. In periods of high activity, the sound it makes is nothing more alarming than a strong gust of wind.
Correction: “The sound it MADE was no more alarming than a strong gust of wind.” Obviously, this is no longer the case =p
Mine makes this sound as well, exactly how you described (during high activity, startup, etc.) It’s been doing it for some time now, and yes, I am pretty sure it’s just your fan. My cd-rom does this too. Also, it may need to be cleaned. Get a can of compressed air and give it a go over. My laptop doesn’t have a keyboard, so I can see the fan and inside parts, and yeah, they get icky! I think after a few years, the mechanics kind of get old… also have you had windows reinstalled? It’s really good to sort of ‘wipe the slate clean’ by deleting your op system and reinstalling it. This will help the computer function better and not work so hard causing the fan to overload.
